Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine for children has been given full approval for children ages 5 to 11 following a vote by a federal advisory committee and an official signoff from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director, Rochelle Walensky, M.D., M.P.H. With this news, the vaccine is now available to children at pharmacies and pediatricians' offices across the country.

The vaccine is a safe and effective measure to protect against COVID-19 that can keep one from spreading the virus or becoming seriously ill with it, according to the CDC. Like with other vaccines, side effects may occur after your child receives it. Walensky said in a news conference that the vaccine side effects were "mild" and "self-limiting" for this age group, with the most common side effect being a sore arm.

While many kids are excited to receive their shot, some may feel nervous about receiving a shot—this is a very normal response that many parents may be familiar with. There are plenty of ways to comfort your child through the process. Some parents find success in promising treats afterward to reward them for their bravery, while others swear by helpful tools like the Bionix ShotBlock that's meant to minimize pain and anxiety around receiving a shot. Reviewed's parenting editor, Anna Lane, says that for younger kids, it helps to bring their blanket or favorite stuffed animal.

If your child is planning to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, below are a few products that may help relieve some of the post-shot discomforts, along with two essential items that help slow down the spread of COVID-19. The CDC recommends that anyone with concerning or lasting side effects should contact their healthcare provider, or in this case, the healthcare provider of your child.

1. A reusable ice pack to soothe aches or pains

The durable nylon prevents leaking and is easy to wash.

Icing the vaccination spot may provide immediate relief to any aches your child is experiencing. This one from Amazon has over 24,000 rave reviews from people who like that the flexible design allows you to wrap and bend it to fit snugly against any body part (like your upper arm, in this case). They also say it stays ice cold for hours.

2. A washcloth to place over your arm

Laying a clean, cool washcloth on the arm can help ease irritation.

If your child notices any discomfort on the arm in which they were vaccinated, the CDC recommends laying a clean, cool washcloth on the area. With several glowing reviews, these Amazon Basics washcloths are praised for being very soft and absorbent and surprisingly high quality for the price.

3. A water bottle to stay hydrated

If your child is getting vaccinated, make sure they're hydrated beforehand.

One of the CDC's top tips for anyone getting vaccinated is to drink plenty of fluids. An easy way to make sure you're getting enough H2O? A reusable water bottle. Of all the water bottles for kids that we've tested at Reviewed, we found the Hydro Flask Kids Water Bottle to be the best. The double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks ice cold, yet it's still lightweight enough for kids to carry with ease. Bonus: It's dishwasher safe!

4. A face mask to keep them (and others) safe

Disney Cloth Face Masks let kids sport their favorite characters.

Despite the fact that your child may now be partially vaccinated, you still need to take precautions to protect yourself and those around you, the CDC says. One of the best ways to do that is by wearing a face mask. Of all the kids' face masks we've tested at Reviewed, our kid testers preferred the Disney Cloth Face Masks. In addition to their adorable Disney mask designs, the mask itself fits snugly and can be washed easily in a machine washer.

5. A thermometer to monitor any potential fevers

Find out if your child is running a fever in seconds.

The CDC notes that running a slight fever after receiving the vaccine is totally normal (although if it persists for a few days, go see your healthcare provider ASAP). To monitor your temperature, use a digital thermometer like this one that has over 56,000 reviews from Amazon shoppers. They like that it's speedy and very easy to use, with a clear digital reading and color to mark whether your temperature is normal or high.

6. Hand sanitizer to take with you to the appointment

These travel-sized Purell are easy to toss in a child's backpack or pocket.

"It’s important for everyone to continue using all the tools available to help stop this pandemic," the CDC explains, noting that the vaccine can take up to two weeks to be effective. During that time (and when you're going to get the vaccine itself), hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol can help keep you safe. These travel-sized Purell are easy to toss in a child's backpack or pocket.

7. An electric blanket to stay warm if the chills hit

An electric blanket can help keep the chills at bay.

If your child gets hit with some not-so-pleasant chills, an electric blanket can come in handy. Out of all the electric blankets we have tested, one of our favorites is the Biddeford Blankets Microplush with Sherpa Electric Blanket. With soft faux shearling and 10 temperature settings, this blanket is perfect for use beyond calming COVID-19 vaccine side effects and well into winter months.

8. An ice roller to cool down or relieve pain

A more convenient way to cool down or soothe a sore arm.

Your child can use this ice roller the same way you would an ice pack (i.e., over the sore spot on your arm or on your forehead if you feel a headache coming on). Thousands of reviewers love that it's easy to use—simply chill it and then roll—and that it feels so soothing against your skin.
