This month, Old Sturbridge Village is offering families the chance to slow down and reconnect with each other and simpler times while sleeping under the stars inside their quaint village.

It’s the first time the living history museum, which allows visitors to experience the world as it existed in rural New England 200 years ago, is hosting the overnight event specifically for families. Typically, they host a September camp out for scouts, but switched gears this year to market the event to all families.

The unique camping experience on Saturday, Aug. 27 kicks off with a cookout and games on the village common while families pitch their tents and set up their “campsite.” An evening of tours and activities throughout the museum’s sprawling countryside campus follow, capped off with stories by a roaring bonfire.

Campers can expect programming like tin punching, letterboxing, woodworking or open hearth cooking. Family games like bocce, corn hole, and badminton will be set up on the common. As night falls, “there will definitely be a lantern-led tour,” said Senior Educator for School and Youth Programs Jen Silverio. A hot buffet breakfast will be served in the morning.

Participants are welcome to stroll through the museum at their leisure; registration includes two-day admission to Old Sturbridge Village. One of the nation’s largest outdoor history museums, it offers more than 40 historic buildings and 200 forested acres to explore.

There are no available electrical outlets on the common, but campers won't exactly be roughing it. There are bathrooms located close to the camp sites, but no shower facilities.

The Great Family Camp Out is for children ages 5 and up. One adult is required for every five children; one-to-one ratio for children under the age of 6.

Registration is open through Aug. 19 and is $75 for youths, $55 for adults. More information is at
