Baseball-inspired STEM Fun Comes to Museum of Science for Red Sox Weekend
The Museum of Science in Boston is on deck to welcome baseball fans for the third annual Red Sox Weekend, June 1 and 2, bringing baseball-inspired STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) content to visitors to the Museum and members of Red Sox Kid Nation, the team’s fan club for fans 14 and under.
As part of the weekend’s activities, Museum visitors will experience a variety of baseball and STEM-themed hands-on activities, from designing gliders that transport Wally to Fenway Park to measuring reaction time, the weekend is packed with fun activities and speakers for Red Sox and baseball fans of all ages. Throughout the weekend, elements of the Red Sox Showcase will be featured at the Museum, allowing visitors to test their baseball skills with a Red Sox pitching station, VR headsets, and more.
In addition to Red Sox and baseball-themed STEM activities throughout the Museum, fans will have the opportunity to meet Red Sox team mascots, Wally the Green Monster and his sister, Tessie, and former Red Sox player, Sam Horn, as well as get their faces painted. Ian Davis, founder of Rockstar New England, will speak about baseball and statistics on Saturday and Former Red Sox Pitcher and World Champion, Lenny DiNardo, will discuss “How to Pitch in the Big Leagues” on Sunday.
The Museum of Science has partnered with the Red Sox to create integrated baseball and science content in the 25-page Wally & Tessie’s STEM Workbook. The workbook features lessons and questions to encourage children to think about baseball as a scientist. It is available to fans during Red Sox Weekend at the Museum and at home games at Fenway’s Kid Nation booth and Wally’s Clubhouse, located in the Champion’s Club at Fenway Park. Both the Kid Nation booth and Wally’s Clubhouse are located on the Kids Concourse near Gate B.
Activities and baseball-themed events will be happening throughout the Museum over both Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2. Visitors are encouraged to wear their Red Sox gear and participate in the celebration.
