MAY'SCHILD

MIASIA, age 11 MIASIA, age 11 Every child deserves a place to call home and the outpouring of love that is the foundation of a healthy parent-child relationship. However, there are nearly 10,000 Massachusetts children and teens in foster or other substitute care who have suffered abuse, neglect, abandonment, and betrayal at a time in their lives when they needed to be cared for most.

So many of these valiant survivors, entrusted to the care of the state, wait endlessly for that special person or family to come forward. For far too many, the day never comes.

While becoming a foster or adoptive parent certainly comes with challenges, the rewards of parenting such a child are tremendous.

Bay State Parent hopes you will give pause to the following profile and consider how you can help.

Such a pretty name goes so well with a beautiful girl, who is described by her foster mother as "loving, affectionate, sweet, upbeat, and a ball of energy."

Miasia is of African-American descent, and she loves to play outdoors. She enjoys "shooting hoops," climbing trees, playing softball, which she has done competitively, ice skating, and roller skating. The 11-year old girl also enjoys swimming, riding her bike, drawing, and doing arts & crafts.

Miasia is a gifted singer, who started singing with a relative on cable television at age 7. She sings in the choir at her church. Miasia has a strong faith in God, and was very excited when she was baptized last summer.

Enrolled in fifth grade, she enjoys math and recess, but not necessarily in that order. She has hopes of being either an obstetrician (she loves babies), an EMT, or a police officer. Two of her favorite television shows are "Super Nanny," and "Extreme Home Makeover."

Miasia is a hard worker. She takes pride in whatever she does. She does job well, be it cleaning her room or taking care of a pet. She is very interested in trying new things, and likes to be on the go.

She has been in the care and custody of the Department of Social Services for a number of years, and sometimes asks, "Am I going to be a foster child forever?"

Miasia is legally free to be adopted, as her birth parents' rights have been terminated by the Court. She has two younger siblings, that she would need to stay in touch with.

She would do best in a traditional family, who is nurturing, and has strong faith. She would love to be an only child, or one of two children in the home, where she would be "the center of attention," and be allowed to participate in various child-oriented activities. Ideally, she would like to have a mother figure whom, could be culturally skilled at fixing her hair.

If you would like more information about Miasia, or if you would like general information about adoption and/or foster care, please call Barbara Ford at the Massachusetts Department of Social Services at 508 929-2143.
