Event Description

Local Families Find Great Bargains at Parent Talk’s
Children's Used Clothing, Toy and Equipment Sale

Needham, MA – Parent Talk, a nonprofit, volunteer organization in Boston’s Metrowest area that supports families with young children, is readying its semi-annual Used Clothing, Toy & Equipment Sale to be held Saturday, May 5, 2012. This spring’s Parent Talk sale offers families the opportunity to stock up on high-quality, bargain-priced children's and maternity items, while earning through consignment or donating to local charities.

With the warmer weather approaching, many are looking to avoid paying retail prices for expensive outdoor toys and gear. Needham resident Christine Mawhinney marvels, “[I] got an outdoor Little Tykes swing for $4!” Yet another Needham parent raves, “I just love the sale! They have amazing stuff at great prices. I found one of those turtle sandboxes for $5, instead of $50, and a Barbie ride-on car for $20, when they go for $100 or more in the stores!”

Shoppers are consistently delighted by the quality of items found at the sale. Jodi Rooney, a Needham mother, says, “5 years ago, I bought a $50 sound machine for $3 and it is still working today!” Sarah Dussault is equally impressed with the deals she’s found: “I purchased a co-sleeper for $20 that normally retails for $125,” while Heather Salerno shares that she got a “Hanna Andersson baby jacket that retails for $50 for $5.” Christine Mawhinney adds, “[I was also able to find] a remote control car for $1, a Leapster game for $1, a big bag of Legos for $5” – which any parent of young children knows are just unbeatable deals.

Occupying over two floors of Needham’s Christ Episcopal Church and featuring thousands of bargain children's items, Parent Talk's semi-annual sale is attended by hundreds of shoppers. Last sale, almost 10,000 items were sold.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary year, Parent Talk relies almost exclusively on volunteers, and last sale about 270 of them helped out with the sale. Proceeds benefit Parent Talk's community work and events; all unsold items are donated directly to local charities that depend on these goods to fulfill their missions, including Circle of Hope, Cradles to Crayons, and Big Brother/Big Sister.

Boston Marathon Tragedy Poll

Did you talk to your children about the Boston Marathon tragedy?

  • Yes. I was worried they would hear about it and be scared, so I kept it short and answered their questions.
  • No. I'm still trying to understand what happened and I don't want my kids to be overwhelmed or frigtened.
  • I wasn't sure what to say, but I'm hoping to have my family help the victims and their families.
